History of Sports Scholarship Scheme & Details
In pursuit of its function of promoting excellence amongst its students University College Cork introduced a Sports Bursary Scheme in October 1992 when sixteen Awards were made for various sports. While UCC has always enjoyed a reputation for success at sport this scheme played a significant part in ensuring that UCC retained this reputation. An unprecedented series of successes of clubs and individuals during the 1995/96 session encouraged a raising of the status of the awards from Sports Bursaries to Sports Scholarships. Since 1992, 160 different students have benefited from what is now an annual investment of &eur;80,000 partially funded by those listed below to whom the College extends its grateful thanks.
The positive effects of the Sports Scholarships Scheme
• Awardees are encouraged to acquire increased levels of fitness and skill, so becoming better players/performers.
• The club of which an awardee is a member benefits with fellow-club members motivated to acquire similar standards of fitness/performance.
• The improved performance of College teams and individuals especially on representative teams have continued to contribute positively to the reputation of UCC.
Accreditation
UCC Clubs Executive acknowledges that the University supports and promotes student involvement in extra-curricular activities. As an acknowledgement of this support, extra-curricular involvement through either a full academic years participation in a club or membership of a club committee will be rewarded through the Sports Award issued by the Clubs Executive .
The Clubs Executive already acknowledges those who achieve outstanding levels in their various fields through the Sports Star Awards and the Scholarship Program. The Sports Award is a chance to recognize the dedicated players and members of clubs who may not be the star of a particular team but are none the less the back bone of the team. We are looking for the type of player who is there through hail rain or snow giving his/her all for their sport.
This is the first year a system like this is in place. We hope that by showing how the awards can be run at an Clubs Executive level we will be able to eventually get this award onto the college transcripts, a feet almost achieved last year. So far the system is running as expected with no major concerns and clubs have their first of three membership forms in. To be eligible for the award club member names must appear on all three forms. Once this criterion is filled and after a quick validation check at the end of term students who qualify and who have applied will receive a Sports Award. Club committee members will also receive a Sports Award for their contributions to club activities.
We hope through this new system to raise the standards of clubs across the board and to increase the competition for committee places. Clubs in UCC can’t survive without those dedicated members and we feel through this award that they will get the recognition they deserve.
