Hey,
My name is Daithi Linnane and I’m your Deputy President for the 2010/11 year. The job of Deputy President has many different parts, which affect students in many different ways. In order to understand what I do, it’s easiest to break it down into its separate portfolios.
Commercial Manager
As the commercial manager for the SU I am in charge of our commercial activities and our external revenue streams. I regularly deal with local and national businesses in to organise mutually beneficial deals for students and the businesses. As well as this, I look after advertising and sponsorship for student publications and other SU ventures.
Communications Officer
Up until a few years ago the position of Deputy President was called the Communications Officer. In this capacity I deal with providing information to students about the SU, our services, our campaigns, and how we can best represent students. As well as this, I help convey the views of the students to the SU. This is done in many ways from our email system, to our website, Twitter and Facebook accounts.
Media Manager
The UCC Media Exec was established to remove editorial input from the SU to the staff of the media outlets under it. However, the SU is still involved on an administrative level. As the head of the Media Exec I administer its budget and act as General Manager of The Express and Motley. I deal with disputes or legal issues when they occur, as well as looking after advertising, printing and payment for these publications.
Campaigns Officer
As Campaigns Officer I am in charge of sourcing material and strategising the SU’s campaigns. Most campaign topics are chosen by the Welfare and Education Working Groups, as well as external campaigns from the USI and charities. I help to plan and co-ordinate these campaigns.
Deputy President
Finally, my title! As Deputy President I assist the President in his work and fill in for him on certain occasions. When the President is unable to fulfil his duties due to illness, workload or anything else I step in. As well as this I sit on a number of committees with the President or on behalf of the President and report back to him.
So as you can see my job involves a little bit of everything but a lot of work altogether. I sit on around 30 committees, as well as informal groups and business meetings, so it’s a pretty hectic job, but its worth.
If you would like to contact me or get involved in any of the aspects of the SU I am responsible for, please contact me at the details on the right hand side of the page!
Thank you and enjoy your time in UCC!
