Societies Awards 2012

Congratulations to all of our unreal Societies on their work over the last year! This year’s awards judging was incredibly tough. For 21 Society awards we read through 429 applications. That’s 12,010 pages of applications, or 302,000 words of applications. Unfortunately we were not able to honour everyone on our two awards nights. This is not a reflection of the quality or quantity of work done by our Societies, rather, it is a reflection of the increasingly high standards that Societies in UCC are aiming for every year.

Welcome from Societies President

Hello Everyone,

My name is JD O'Connell and I’m this year's Societies Guild President - its nice to meet you!

We are currently preparing for yet another jam-packed year of activity on campus. We need your help because UCC will have almost 90 active societies this year and each of them would love to meet you!

Joining a society during your years of college is one of the best decisions you will ever make. It’s also one of the easiest because no matter who you are or what your tastes, there should be a society to suit. Societies are student run and have always been vital to the student experience. They enable you to seek out unusual skills, continue hobbies of old, make many new friends, take on responsibility and, of course, fill out your CV. Their future members and committees are amongst you so don’t be shy about introducing yourselves; they are expecting you and you will fit right in!

UCC Societies are grouped under these headings - Academic, Charitable, Creative, Gaming/Role-playing, Political, Religious, and Social. The societies themselves are governed by my team - the Societies Guild Executive. We concern ourselves with all societies that exist in UCC so if you have any questions we would love to hear from you. A list of email addresses for each society is also provided if you wish to contact the society directly, enquire as to meeting times, ask to be added to a mailing list etc.

All societies will be welcoming new members throughout the college year but the majority of introductions will happen on ‘Societies Day’ which will be the Wednesday of Fresher's Week in Devere Hall of the Students Centre. Every society will be present to introduce themselves, answer questions and most importantly, sign up new members!

So that’s it from me, I wish you all every success and I hope that each of you takes advantage of the wealth of resources that societies in UCC have to offer.
